How To Achieve Your Full Potential

Dec 29th 2010 at 4:34 PM

Today, I am going to share with you a concept that is so incredibly powerful and so obvious that you will wonder why you haven’t fully tapped into it by now. I will tell you how to achieve your full potential – but pay attention! The concept is so simple, you might easily overlook its purpose and value.

I learned about this concept a few years ago in the book, Earl Nightingale's Greatest Discovery (PMA Book Series). Whenever I apply it thoughtfully and diligently, I benefit from it. You can too.

There are two parts to my message today, so be certain to read through this entire article.

Part one is an overview of Earl’s great discovery. After many years of research and study, he came to the realization that all success in life, whether personal or business, can be attributed to the following six all-encompassing words: we become what we think about.

“All of a sudden, there they were,” he relates in the book, “the words, in the proper order that I had been looking for for seventeen years – the astonishing truth that we become what we think about.”

This revelation had an immediate impact on him.

“It was as if I were suddenly immersed in a bright light,” Earl recalls. “I remember sitting bolt upright at the thought of the simplicity of it.”

Those six words pointed him in the right direction and changed his life. “There at last was the secret of success!” he exclaimed.

In the book, he explains in greater detail how our minds are the steering mechanisms of our lives and how the secret of success and failure and everything in between can be found in how we focus our thoughts. If we think about succeeding, our minds will direct us to each successive step necessary to achieve the desired result.

Unfortunately, the opposite is also true: if we think about failing and dwell on things that might hold us back, our minds will move us towards failure.

Fortunately, we have the power to control and direct our thoughts: it is our thinking ability that separates us from the animals. We have the power to choose only success!

Now for part two of today’s message: how to use Earl's great discovery to achieve your full potential.

Earl explains that we grow into our expectations. He laments the reality that so few people generate personal expectations that live up to their true potential.

The starting point for great expectations is vision, he says, and asks, “What is your vision of your future?”

He emphasizes the need to create a clear vision because clarity brings focus and we need focus to make progress. “When our thinking is chaotic, our lives are chaotic,” he warns.

In order for your vision to be clear and focused you must carefully and thoughtfully plan it out.

“The winners of the world are those men and women who plan it that way,” says Earl. “They are people with a vision of the future that is sufficiently important to them that they are willing to do what is necessary to arrive in the midst of their vision.”

He reminds us once again that we become what we think about.

“If you know what you want to become, you will become it,” he asserts. “Visualization is a force of incalculable power.”

Friends, do you see the purpose, power and potential in the concept I have shared with you today? This principle should be gripping you with excitement! Think about it; dwell on it until you fully grasp what it is all about. Take time to let it sink in.

Let’s recap the key points. To achieve your full potential:

1) Clarify your vision of your future; truly clarify it. What is it that you passionately desire to become? Plan it out in careful detail. Knowing it with absolute certainty is the starting point.

2) Expect to win! Expect that you will live up to your potential and that you will achieve your goals no matter what obstacles may lay in your path. Think of obstacles as being stepping stones to higher personal achievement.

3) We become what we think about, so think only about success and achievement. Think about the actions, steps and methods that move you closer to your goals. Think of everything you see, read or hear as having the potential to inspire, encourage or support you in some way in your quest for success.

Finally, be certain to set high expectations for yourself because as Earl has said, we grow into our expectations. And remember, your mind is the steering mechanism of your life, so be sure to focus it properly.

Friends, this article is based on just a few ideas presented on pages six, seven and eight of the book, Earl Nightingale's Greatest Discovery, Six Words That Changed The Author’s Life. I refer to this book regularly and enthusiastically recommend it to you if you want to learn how to achieve your full potential.

It's amazing how many successful people believe in a variant of this theme isn't it? I guess that's because it's so true lol. Visualisation is one of the most important aspects of success, I believe, because if we don't have faith in ourselves and learn to visualise a positive future how can we expect others to follow our lead and want to be around us?

Hello, Yasser: Thanks for reading and for commenting. Yes, the ideas in the laws of attraction book probably have sprung from earlier books and material like Earl Nightingale's Greatest Discovery and others.

In fact, Earl makes note in his book that his ideas came from much earlier books and materials that had been around for years, even decades.

Someone once said something like, "There is no new information in the world. It is just old information reworked into new forms." (Or something like that.)

Either way, this book from Earl is filled with ideas and recommendations that can make a big difference in the life of any reader. GT :-)

A very enlightening and inspiring article... and to think that it is all hinged on these six simple sounding, but in reality, very powerful words: "we become what we think about." I've given it a thumbs up. I hope other readers also do the same so that it can become more "visible." With the new year of 2011 just around the corner, we could all do with such encouraging and inspiring articles to fire us up.
