Highlights from a Search Engine Optimization Guide

I have covered these highlights from a search engine optimization guide a few times in blog posts and articles here and there on the Internet. Seems like a good idea to post them here at IM faceplate, too.

Most of what I know about search engine optimization (SEO) I have learned from Internet Marketing mentors. In one sense, my SEO practices are fairly narrow, but that is only because in my mind, there are just three basic areas to focus on.

The three keys to effective SEO that I have learned and regularly practice are:

- Keyword Research

- On-site Optimization

- Off-site Optimization

Keyword Research is where SEO all begins and it is one of the most important things you can do for your online business.

In my blog post, Search Engine Optimization Strategies Must Be Balanced, I state that keyword marketing involves identifying the right keywords and phrases for your website, researching the competition for those keywords, picking the ones most suitable for your purposes and then using them in your on-site and off-site optimization and marketing.

You can use online keyword tools to help you determine the level of competition for the keywords you want to use, and to find variations on your preferred keyword phrases.

On-site Optimization focuses on areas of your website such as your content, the positioning of keywords in that content, and even the density of keywords on a page. It also includes specific factors in the HTML of your web pages, as well as links on the pages of your site that point to other pages also on your site.

Off-site Optimization involves getting links posted on other websites pointing back to your site. There is more value in getting backlinks from sites closely similar to yours than sites with little similarity. You can further enhance the quality of a backlink by using anchor text with it. The anchor text you use should be the keywords that the page the link points back to is optimized for.

In my blog post, I note that for maximum SEO success, you should balance your efforts with a good mix of both on-site and off-site optimization. Additionally, when building backlinks, you should use a variety of methods and not depend on just one or two methods.

As mentioned in the beginning of this article, the three SEO highlights included here are based on information in a particular search engine optimization guide that I have referred to for several years. There are many such guides available and I encourage you to find one and follow the recommendations to improve your SEO marketing efforts.
