Galaxy S10 Chipset Discovered in S9 Software

Nov 27th 2018 at 8:13 PM

All eyes are on Samsung’s 10th-anniversary phone, the Galaxy S10. The handheld brings to the market cutting-edge tech not just with a brand new design, but a novel in-display ultrasonic-based fingerprint reader — a real rival to Apple’s Face ID.

Other top features include much thinner bezels that will radically increase its size, triple back cameras, a 5G option, and amazing colors.

There’s more… by accident sharp-eyed XDA’s developer, Max Weinbach discovered a next-gen chipset embedded in the code for the upcoming update of Samsung’s Galaxy S9, along with mentions of the folding Galaxy F smartphone. This discovery has significant consequences.

Weinbach actually came across a reference by Samsung to a yet-to-be-released chipset called the Qualcomm ‘Snapdragon 8150’ - a name that was thought to be just a rumor. The name alluded to a key overhaul of the Snapdragon 8xx range with an entirely fresh branding plus the initiation of the first-ever dedicated neural processing unit (NPU) by Qualcomm, which will offer significantly improved machine learning.

The Snapdragon 8150 is not just vital to Samsung and Qualcomm, but to all top Android smartphones, because as of 2017, Apple installed a dedicated NPU in its Qualcomm and A11 Bionic chipsets and has done so ever since.
The story doesn’t end there.

The next-gen Snapdragon by Qualcomm has also been designed to operate in tandem with the Qualcomm X50 modem — its first 5G-compatible consumer hardware. Given that for the near-term iPhones are limited to 4G, this adds to the likely big win for the company and adds credibility to leaks that the Galaxy S10 will be 5G.

Note that the super advanced Galaxy S10, the most ambitious smartphone by Samsung in ages, will not come cheap. However, Samsung’s other limited edition trend-setter will cost much more! In the future, Samsung’s Galaxy S10 might see the company break through further boundaries with the introduction of something even more drastic... might it be the mass-manufacture of folding displays?
